Responsible housing practices play a crucial role in improving equity among renters and their communities. They can also support environmental sustainability. Founded in 1972, UDR is one of the largest apartment property managers in the U.S.—owning nearly 150 apartment communities nationwide. i UDR’s portfolio includes 3,700 affordable housing units, which marks a 50% increase since 2018. ii The company recently rolled out a service that makes its rentals more financially accessible, by enabling renters to put down security deposits through monthly payments rather than a large upfront fee. iii
Another priority for UDR has been its environmental impact. In 2020, UDR invested $12 million into energy conservation projects, one of which installed 841,000 kWh of additional solar generation capacity. UDR has earned LEED silver or equivalent certifications for all new developments since 2015—and, as of 2020, it has 22 certified properties. iv Management diversity has also been a focus. UDR has formally adopted a protocol to ensure that diverse candidates are considered for inclusion on its board of directors. In 2021, 40% of UDR’s board were either women or men from historically underrepresented groups. v
